TOP PHOTO 001 | Sparkling Water in the Gilfenklamm in South Tyrol (Northern Italy) Overview |
The Gilfenklamm is an impressive gorge in Southern Tyrol. A steep trail leads through it. However, it is difficult to make a good photo of this spectacular play. Because of its depth, low sunlight never reaches the bottom, while mist is usually absent because of the water- and air turbulence. When we arrived, it was almost dusk. The intention was to “do” the gorge the next morning at sunrise. By now, half an hour was left at most before the sun would set. We stood near the upper entrance where the first small rapids announce the real job. The light was hard. Nevertheless, I took my photo gear and descended some five meters towards the river bed. At that absolutely non-impressive location I saw a few spots where the last sun rays were playing with the splashing water. In backlight my viewfinder only showed random movement of water, making accurate focussing difficult. It was a telephoto job, you know, 350 mm medium format with extension tubes. An exposure time of some quarter of a second then shows the water flow in a streamline mode, while some droplets can be razor sharp due to short-time reflections in the sunlight. However, it is easy to be wise after the event. Actually I was not really sure what I was doing, one just tries. I shot some six frames at this spot. My digitally equipped photo-mate appeared to have taken a number of shots at exactly the same spot, without me knowing it. In the evening he showed me his results on his laptop. I was amazed by his surprising results. At that stage, the uncertainty of the photographer, working still analogue, strikes hard... How will my pictures look like? Fortunately, one of the six exposures was a brilliant shot.
