TOP PHOTO 009 | Late evening atmosphere Uummannaq, Greenland Overview |
Last autumn I have made a trip of a month to the (north)western part of Greenland; three years earlier in 2009, I visited the same area in the same season. This time we went a little bit later, in the hope of experiencing the transition to the real winter. Unfortunately one cannot plan the weather beforehand. Due to a never-seen storm depression, crossing Greenland in August on its way to the North Pole region, September and the beginning of October were extremely wet and mild. No photographs of blizzard conditions therefore, nevertheless enough variation to make some nice impressions. Look for yourself in the Greenland gallery of the site. I have chosen one of those impressions to fill this space. We look from Uummannaq in south-easterly direction towards the ice cap with its fast flowing glaciers creating the ice bergs that tend to surround the town and island. The sun had set for an hour or so, but the diffuse clouds caused a serene atmosphere with soft pink tones. The blue-turquoise of the ice bergs contrasted nicely. They do not seem large, but don’t be fooled, the ones further away are up to seventy meters high. The mountains in the background reach some 2000m.
