TOP PHOTO 006 | Egerszalók mineral deposits Overview |
This picture was taken in the autumn of 2006. Two kms south of Egerszalók in NE-Hungary a hot spring has created some beautiful mineral deposits. The hot spring was activated by surprise in 1961when drilling for oil. Similar deposits can be found in the Yosemite Park and in Pamukkale, but here it is on a much smaller scale. When I took my photographs it was a morning with diffuse sun light. The wind passed over the mineral terraces towards me. Combined with the steam from the warm water this caused nice and subtle variations in the light. Although the whole area measures only 30x30 meters at most, one can obtain images with quite some variety. It is fascinating how some of these give the impression that one is looking at a large-scale landscape, while the real extent is only a couple of meters or even less. I have added some more photos of this site to my gallery Middle & Eastern Europe. I was lucky; when visiting the site it was yet to be discovered and reasonably accessible. But there were plans for the year after to turn it into a luxury Spa resort – unfortunately. And so has happened, as you look on the internet. So I'm not sure whether it is still as easy to photograph the premises.
